nYou might recognize Joe Buck as the snarling maniac of a sideman to Hank Williams III, manhandling his stand-up bass like a good ol’ American rite of passage. Or maybe you caught his appearance on Redneck Minute, a DIY webcast hosted by Crazy Redneck. Holy confederate flags! Buck is currently swinging ’round the country performing acoustic sets for his rabid followers. Tonight, he and Capt. Sean of Throwrag will take their rowdy punk and cow-punk stylings down a notch, performing stripped-down material perfect for the Jackalope’s rather intimate surroundings and bountiful supply of PBR. nHUDSON RIVER SCHOOL FAREWELL
nHudson River School are calling it quits after 20 years. In their two decades together, the Salt Lake City rockers have experienced nearly every aspect of the now-all-too-common music industry story: Band starts out with a solid DIY ethic, catches the ear of a major label (in this case Sony), comes this close to achieving mainstream success but gets lost in a merger (in this case BMG’s epic takeover), continues to tour with high-profile acts like The Used, fields offers from other labels and artists hoping to use buy various songs … “But it never all came together, and in the mean time, everyone got busy with life,” says founding member Spencer Jacobs of the group’s decision to call it a day. “All of the close calls and let-downs kind of took their toll. A lot of motivation was lost.” HRS opted to end on a high note with a performance featuring songs off their denouement, Rise & Fall. Help the group achieve some positive closure, tonight. MAC LETHAL
nMac Lethal’s debut 11:11 plays like an exercise in anger management, with the Kansas City emcee targeting everything and everyone that makes his eyebrows furrow. “I think a lot of people these days are bitches,” the self-proclaimed anti-socialite says on “Calm Down Baby,” running down a laundry list of pet peeves, from Tool to vegans and malls. Wilco, apparently, is a rare ray of sunshine. Go figure. Lethal is pretty damned serious about his bitter rage, but he rants with a sly smile, waving his acerbic wit like a fabulous freak flag. The effect is surprisingly pleasant and cathartic. We’re especially partial to the breathless “Fuck Nick Cannon Freestyle” off Lethal’s first mixtape. Ahh, bask in that shit-talking afterglow. nSPARKS & SPOOLS
nWe wouldn’t be surprised if Taylor Christensen tossed Three Cups of Sea Water in along with all the other random found sounds coloring his unique debut album as Sparks & Spools. The local artist runs a tight ship of organized chaos painstakingly assembled into minimalist folk recordings—a quirky symphony with movements featuring handclaps, squeaky door hinges, old-west whistles, bicycle bells, spoken word narratives, sweeping piano flourishes—and creepy, slowly plinked keys—that’s both comforting and eerie, like an antique doll collection. Listening to the album, you might wonder, “But can he pull it off live?” Christensen doesn’t engage his skills onstage all too often, so tonight is as good a night as any to score the answer to your query.
