Beyond the Division & Fair Boundaries Meetings

By Eric S. Peterson
Posted // September 23,2009 -

This is the week to check out an ACLU of Utah event at Utah Valley University on bridging the divide between religious liberty and equality for the LGBT community. On the ethics front, the Fair Boundaries group will be pitching its quest to get a nonpartisan redistricting initiative to a vote of the people in the 2010 election.

Beyond the Division
Friday, Sept. 25
Between Prop 8, Main Street Plaza Kiss-Ins, and the endless controversy generated by opinions of Chris Buttars, it sometimes feels like the culture war in Zion will never end. But it doesn’t have to be that way, which is why the Utah chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union and Utah Valley University’s gender studies program are hosting a forum on religious liberty and equitable treatment and protections for Utah’s LGBT community. The forum will tackle these issues with presentations from BYU and U of U law professors, legislators, and others. The event is free and open to the public.
Utah Valley University, 800 W. University Parkway. Sept. 25, 1-3 p.m. Contact Anna Brower at the ACLU of Utah for more info at 801-521-9862 ext. 100 or abrower@acluutah.org

Fair Boundaries Meetings
Tuesday, Sept. 29 & Wednesday, Sept. 30
The Fair Boundaries group continues to ask whether politicians should be setting the boundaries for their own voting districts, something the group considers a conflict of interest. If you lean toward that point of view, then the Fair Boundaries group is looking for your support. Come to one of the meetings and learn how the initiative would create an independent commission to draw up voting districts that represent the character of communities, not just voting blocks that keep incumbents in power.
University of Utah, Hinckley Caucus Room, 200 S. Campus Drive, Sept. 29 9 a.m.; Park City Library, Santy Auditorium, 1255 Park Ave., Park City, Sept. 30, 6 p.m. For more info, visit FairBoundaries.org
