Trees, Beer & Plaster

By Eric S. Peterson
Posted // September 16,2009 - Summer may be ending, but there’s still opportunity to sow the seeds of civic engagement. This week, trees can be planted, funds can be raised for avalanche safety, and walls can be built to help the planet.

Tree Planting at Emma Russell Park
Thursday, Sept. 17
The good folks of Tree Utah are hosting a tree-planting event at Roy’s Emma Russell Park. According to a news release, the event will begin with a short tutorial on tree planting, after which volunteers will “dig in.” Get it? Dig in? Nothing? Ah, anyway, show up with work clothes and water and help make Roy a little greener.

Fall Fundraising Party for Utah Avalanche Center
Thursday, Sept. 18
The Utah Avalanche Center has kept a vigilant eye on Utah’s prized snow and keeping winter adventurers up to speed on avalanche threats. While the center receives some government funding, it depends on donations to stay operational. Luckily, the organization knows how to throw a fund-raiser, teaming up with Uinta Brewing and Black Diamond to throw a fiesta with Mexican food, beverages, live music and a silent auction. For $30 in advance or $35 the day of the event, you can go loco and support the center’s vital winter service.

Natural Clay Wall Surfacing
Saturday, Sept. 19
The Green Building Center is joining forces with the University of Utah for a workshop on using American clay surfacing for your eco-friendly home. The plaster uses recycled clays and other nontoxic ingredients to create a good-looking earth-tone and earthfriendly wall.
