St. Paddy's Revolt

By Eric S. Peterson
Posted // March 11,2009 -

Wear Your Green In honor of St. Paddy’s day, the Revolt looks forward to celebrating this fine holiday by giving readers a chance to show their true green colors with a couple of eco-friendly events. Start off with a look at sustainability in the city and finish up by getting your green thumb into a terrific organic-gardening workshop.

Salt Lake city Sustainability Public Meeting
Thursday, March 12

From preserving open space to encouraging recycling, Salt Lake City is putting a big, green bullseye on municipal zoning and code, with the goal of a more sustainable future. The plan aims at, among other things, creating more walkable neighborhoods and making solar and other alternative energies more accessible to everyone. While green and grandiose, the plan is yet being written; since it’s going to affect a lot of people, the city hopes citizens will get involved and give their thumbs-up to the project.

Salt Lake City Main Library, mentoring room B, 210 E. 400 South, March 12, 5:30-7:30 p.m. E-mail Director of sustainability Vicki Bennett at Vicki.Bennett@slcgov.com or phone 801-535-6540. To review the city’s Phase I and II reports, visit SLCGov.com and click on “District 4” for the links.

Community gardening Workshop
Saturday, March 14
The people want green, and they’re gonna get it. Based on comments they received in fall 2008, the local Wasatch Community Gardens along with the University of Utah’s Department of City & Metropolitan Planning are expanding their garden. The groups are developing garden grounds on the west side of their Neighborhood House facility. So they’re looking for volunteers to pick up spade and shovel to assist with this great, green endeavor. The groups will be looking for soldiers of the soil via a free workshop this Saturday on raised-bed gardening.

Neighborhood House, 1050 W. 500 South, March 14, 1-4 p.m., 801- 359-2658 x 11 or e-mail admin@WasatchGardens.org.
