This week is all about taking steps now to better your community and yourself in the future. If you’re tired of waiting for the so-called leaders to lead on air quality, then join a citizen-led group planning a Clean Air Fair. This week, don’t miss the Salt Lake City Council meeting, which will discuss the funding of transportation planning and the Sugar House streetcar. Later, you can volunteer with the Active Aging Program and help support Salt Lake County’s older population.

Clean Air Fair Planning Presentation
Thursday, Feb. 13

Earlier in the month, a group of average citizens gathered for an idea silo and decided to take on the air-quality problem head-on by creating a Clean Air Fair to entertain and educate Salt Lake Valley families about the pollution problem and ways to make a difference. If you want to get involved in this grassroots event, then swing by the meeting and talk with other citizens about how to market the fair, where to locate it, who to invite and other logistical considerations.

Salt Lake City Council
Tuesday, Feb. 18

It’s budget-tweaking time, and that’s why the council is hosting a public hearing to talk about some changes to the 2013-14 budget. The council is looking to move more money to the Sugar House Streetcar project as well as to help develop a “greenway” along the streetcar corridor. There will also be funding sought for studies of the city’s plans, including a study of Foothill Drive and other projects. It’s your money, so come listen and speak up.

Volunteer With Active Aging
Ongoing

Salt Lake County’s Active Aging Program is looking for volunteers to help with the Walk With Ease program, which helps folks in the county who have arthritis. Volunteers will help out by leading guided walks and hosting health discussions. Finally—some activism your conservative grandmother would be proud of.
