Activism in the Sun

Where/how to rage against the machine

By Eric S. Peterson
Posted // June 14,2012 -

As summer is upon us, why not enjoy some sunshine, activism and good work? This weekend, you can put your green thumb to work volunteering to beautify areas along the Jordan River Trail. Also, check out the Venture Outdoors Festival and learn about how solar energy can help sustain our communities with clean, renewable energy. And Legislative hearings later in the week will offer a glimpse into the issues coming up in next year’s session.

Jordan & Modesto Parks Improvement
Saturday, June 16

Two parks along the Jordan River Trail could use some community loving from volunteers who are needed to help pull weeds, paint and pick up trash. No experience is required, but volunteers are asked to bring their own sunscreen, gloves, water bottle and work clothes. Jordan Park, 1060 W. 900 South, June 16, 8 a.m.-12 p.m., RSVP Savannah Wake at 801-535-6202 or e-mail savannah.wake@slcgov.com

Venture Outdoors Festival
Saturday, June 16

This free festival is a celebration of all the best in hiking, camping and fishing in Utah. It has plenty of activities for the kiddies and resources for exploring the natural beauty around the state. As part of Solar Day Salt Lake, there will be talks about the potential of harnessing the sun’s clean energy to power our communities, society and our future. The event includes live music, food and recreational clinics. Canyon Rim Park, 3100 S. 2900 East, 801-364-8910, June 16, 3-10 p.m., UtahVentureOut.org

Legislative Interim Committees
Wednesday, June 20

This week, the legislative off-season has a great lineup of committees covering the issues that could be the stuff of good sausage-grinding in the 2013 session. For starters, you can get an update on safety concerns with TRAX trains at the transportation committee, or check out an update on Utah’s battle to take public lands from the federal government at the natural-resources committee. Utah Capitol, 350 N. State, 7:30 a.m.-5 p.m., for full schedule of committees visit Le.Utah.gov
