Trails, fundraisers & BBQ

By Eric S. Peterson
Posted // May 31,2012 -

Summer is upon us, and that means thoughts drift to the great outdoors, festivals and barbecues. This week, you can enjoy all those things while making a difference. Celebrate National Trails Day by volunteering to help clean and maintain part of the Bonneville Shoreline Trail. You can also attend a community fair to benefit the Utah County Children’s Justice Center. Later, head to Pat’s Barbecue for some smokin’ good barbecue for a good cause, with proceeds helping to benefit homeless families in Utah.

National Trails Day Service Project
Saturday, June 2

If you’re serious about hiking and enjoying Utah’s trails, then it’s time to put your civic activism where your walking stick is and come help restore a section of the Bonneville Shoreline Trail, a path that, when fully restored, will stretch over 200 miles between Utah and Idaho. June 2, 7:30 a.m.-1 p.m., register and receive driving directions by contacting the Public Lands Information Center at 801-466-6411 or plic@xmission.com

Utah County Children’s Justice Center Fundraiser
Saturday, June 2

The Utah County Children’s Justice Center has long provided investigative and counseling services to families who have suffered crimes against their children. This weekend, support the organization at a summer fair featuring vendors, a silent auction, a fashion show and the live music of The Atomics and the Joe Friday Band. The Shops at Riverwoods, 4801 N. University Ave., Provo, 801-372-3707, 1-5 p.m., CJCFriends.com

Family Promise’s June Jubilee
Wednesday, June 5

It’s a blues, brews and barbecue extravaganza at Pat’s Barbecue, the South Salt Lake eatery that’s won more City Weekly Best of Utah awards than you can shake a pork rib at. The cause of the event is to raise money for Family Promise, a local interfaith-alliance chapter that helps homeless families get back on their feet. Minimum donations are $30 in advance, or $35 at the door, and will get you some good eats and good karma, all on one plate. Pat’s Barbecue, 155 W. Commonwealth Ave. (2125 South), 801-961-8622, 6-9 p.m., FPSL.org
