Plans for Action

East Bench, electro-scraps, OccupySLC

Salt Lake City’s East Bench Master Plan hasn’t been updated in decades, but now, planners want you to show up to a public hearing to add your voice to the mix. Next week, you can drop off your old toxic electronics at a special e-waste collection and also enjoy weeklong street theater courtesy of the Occupy SLC movement.

East Bench Master Plan Meeting
Thursday, Nov. 10

Do you feel like Foothill Drive could use more feet and fewer cars? Or more money for parks and roads? If you believe you know what’s good for your east-side ’hood, then show up at this first Planning Division meeting to learn how to help update the master plan that will help your neighborhood grow over the coming years. Beacon Heights Elementary School, 1850 S. 2500 East, Nov. 10, 6:30-8:30 p.m., EastBenchMP.com

Electronic Scrap Collection
Tuesday, Nov. 15

Many electronic devices contain small, but toxic, amounts of metals that can leak through landfills and contaminate groundwater if not disposed of properly. That’s why it helps to drop off electronics like old computers and televisions with people who know how to take care of toxic trash. At this drop-off, you can also sign a recycling pledge and win a prize from Samsung. 1795 E. South Campus Drive, University of Utah, 801-468-2923, Nov. 15, 8 a.m.-1 p.m., SLVHealth.org

Why Isn’t Anyone Helping Her?
Monday, Nov. 14-Friday, Nov. 18

Courtesy of Occupy SLC, KRCL and City Weekly, a serial street-theater drama is being performed all next week. The titular “her” is one damsel in distress all citizens should worry about—American Democracy. The serialized play is written like a Greek tragedy and chronicles Democracy’s trials at the hands of corporate fat cats. Come one, come all to learn more about the cause for Democracy. Various Main Street locations, Nov. 14-18, noon, OccupySLC.org
