Revolutionary Q&A

By Eric S. Peterson
Posted // May 19,2011 -

In Utah County this week, you can join the good comrades of Utah Valley University’s Revolutionary Students Union as they host Chicano activist Teresa Gutierrez and Fred Goldstein, former leader in the Workers World Party. Or you can attend a meeting of Salt Lake City’s defenders of diversity, the Human Rights Commission. Later, you won’t want to miss the opportunity to get a one-on-one meeting with Mayor Ralph Becker.

Activist Forum With Teresa Gutierrez and Fred Goldstein
Thursday, May 19

Anti-market forces are converging at Utah Valley University, where you can hear two revolutionary thinkers discuss workers rights, immigration and imperialist globalization, for free. Utah Valley University’s Revolutionary Students Union will be hosting Chicano liberation leader Teresa Gutierrez and Fred Goldstein, formerly in the leadership of the the Workers World Party and author of Low-Wage Capitalism, a Marxist take on globalization and the working class. Utah Valley University Library, 800 W. University Parkway, Room LI502, Orem, 801-863-8352, May 19, 7:30-8:30 p.m., UVURSU.com

Human Rights Commission
Thursday, May 19

Salt Lake City’s Human Rights Commission—charged with protecting the human rights of all city residents regardless of race, gender, age, disability, national origin, religion or sexual orientation or identity—will be meeting this week to discuss a vacancy on the commission, review the city’s nondiscrimination ordinance and discuss helping West Valley City create its own Human Rights Commission. Salt Lake City & County Building, 451 S. State, Room 335, 801-535-7734, May 19, 5:30 p.m., SLCGov.com/Mayor/divHR

Meet With Mayor Becker
Wednesday, May 25

Local residents looking to bend Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker’s ear are encouraged to schedule 10-minute meetings for Wednesday. If you’ve got an issue with fees, potholes or just want to give the man a high-five, schedule your meet and greet now. Salt Lake City & County Building, 451 S. State, Mayor’s Conference Room, 801-535-7704, May 25, 4-6 p.m., SLCGov.com/Mayor/Pages/OneOnOne.htm

You're so grandiose. Sheesh... whatever. A couple of things here: 1) Your understanding of socialism is zero. Big government? What has that got to do with socialism. I as a socialist couldn't care less about big government, nor small government for that matter. I care about having good governance, and overcoming bad governance. A "small" government can be just as heartless, exploitive, and evil as any other size can be. Our current "Big government" is actually the creation of Capitalism, bought and paid for to serve the interests of big finance and large corporations; that's not socialism, it's the capitalism of which Reagan and Thatcher (whom you paraphrased) helped create. (And I know what happened in Russia and China, and I, like so many other socialists before me, disagree with the state capitalism those states instituted. They were not socialist, read Marx.)

2) Despite your hope that "Christ will show me that Big Government is not the answer", the Episcopal Church, of which I am a part, is not a stepping stone towards some kind of dumb-me-down right-wing political ideology. It is the result of many years of reading and searching the scriptures to see and understand God. It is my hope that someday you'll put behind you your cheesie political god, which you label "Jesus", and find out who Jesus really is, so we can take communion together before the alter of the Lord.

Hitler cultist? Proud of it? Probably don't believe in God either? My goodness, you are incredably stupid. I mean lightning stupid. The kind of stupidity that just shocks people when they see it. (By the way, even though I'm sure you won't be able to understand this, but I'm actually an Episcopal Christian, and I stand with the enemies of Hitler.)

Posted // May 27,2011 at 06:12 - My mistake. I guess name calling only goes one way with you. I'm glad you're a Christian, though not a very smart one either (like me :) obviously. So maybe there's some hope for you. I pray that Christ will show you that Big Government (socialism) is not the answer. Big Governments always corrupt and squash the people with their power, while they live in comparable luxury (look at Russia). No more freedom for the average Joe.. And all that our Founding Fathers (and mothers, sons and daughters) fought for, is lost. What a waste. The problem with socialism is that, eventually you run out of other people's money. Instead, why don't you just work hard or come up with a good idea and share it and make the world a better place. Stop wasting your time trying to take that away from everyone else. Get a life! Good luck with finding your way, Thomas, and goodbye. You won't be hearing from me anymore.

Sheryl, actually I do know my history and that's why I can say that your head is full of right-wing garbage. It's plain to see you're Skousen cultist.

Posted // May 26,2011 at 20:03 - And you would plainly be a Hitler cultist. And probably proud of it. God save this perverted generation! Oh, sorry, you probably don't believe in God either.

They belong right here, Sheryl. Why don't you get over it and stop telling everyone you disagree with to leave the country.

Posted // May 26,2011 at 16:30 - Maybe you should brush up on your history and find out what made this country so great (until the socialists started getting their way) and what happens to "ordinary" people like you and I under Communism. Maybe Capitalism and rule by the people isn't perfect, but it's far superior to Government run everything and motivation-stripping socialism and communism.
