Run Miles For Smiles, Tracy Aviary Food Drive & General Election Day

By Eric S. Peterson
Posted // October 28,2010 -

It’s that time again where you have to take as much as 20 minutes out of your day—tough work, I know—to vote for the people who will write your laws. Before that fateful Tuesday, you should also take the opportunity to help out the community in a couple other ways. That could be taking part in a costumed 5K run for Operation Smiles or joining a holiday food drive at Tracy Aviary.

Run Miles For Smiles
Saturday, Oct. 30

If you’re already lamenting the end of your 5K season, fear not: There’s still a great Halloween charity run going on at the University of Utah. The Run Miles for Smiles event will give half of your registration fee to the U’s chapter of Operation Smile, which helps set up care for children with cleft palates and other facial deformities. Pre-registration cost is $25, or $30 the day of the event. A costume contest will follow the event.

Tracy Aviary Food Drive
Monday, Nov. 1-Nov. 30

Tracy Aviary is giving discounts on entrance admission throughout the month of November. Just visit the aviary and receive $1 admission for each can of food you bring. The donations will go to the Utah Food Bank, which is especially in need of peanut butter, tuna fish, low-sugar canned fruit, canned stew and vegetables.

General Election Day
Tuesday, Nov. 2

It’s decision day, folks. Check your apathy for a few minutes, head to your polling place and cast your ballot. This year, there are races for federal offices, governor, legislators, county officials and even a few ballot initiatives to consider. Yet, the entire process will take less time than watching a sitcom.
To find your polling location, visit Vote.Utah.gov.
