Earth Day E-Recycling, Fourth Street Clinic Triathlon, Ouelessebougou Alliance

By Eric S. Peterson
Posted // April 21,2010 -

This Earth Day, why not up your greenness? How often do you recycle your old electronics—VCRs, DVD players, cell phones? Learn more about regular e-recycling drop-off days that begin Earth Day. Later, don’t miss a fine springtime fun run to benefit the Fourth Street Clinic, or later, a charity auction to help out the villagers of the impoverished West African nation of Mali.

Earth Day E-Recycling
Thursday, April 22
Throwing electronic waste into landfills fills them with toxic substances like lead and cadmium that can easily contaminate groundwater. Bring your old electronics to this event and hear remarks from Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker, University of Utah President Michael Young and others.
University of Utah, Turpin University Services Building, 1795 E. South Campus Drive, April 22, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. The Salt Lake Valley Health Department will hold a monthly drop-off event; for a schedule of locations, visit SLVHealth.org.

Fourth Street Clinic Triathlon & 5K Fundraiser
Saturday, April 24
The Fourth Street Clinic is a local savior when it comes to treating Salt Lake City’s uninsured homeless population. Come join the University of Utah’s medical students for an annual fundraiser triathlon and hoof it for a good cause. Individual registration is $25, teams for $50 and $20 for the 5Krun/walk.
University of Utah Huntsman Center, 1825 E. South Campus Drive, 801-364-0058, April 24, 7 a.m. registration, race at 9 a.m. FourthStreetClinic.org

Ouelessebougou Alliance 24th Annual Charity Auction
Saturday, April 24
Maybe the name of this event is a mouthful, but don’t let that throw you. This great silent auction supports an organization started here in Utah that, since 1985, has provided support for community-health and education-development projects at the Ouelessebougou village of Mali, Africa. Tickets are $110 per individual or $1,000 for organizations.
Little America Hotel, 500 S. Main, 801-597-1050, April 24, 5:30 p.m. LiftEachOther.org
