As the Utah Symphony has advertised prominently all over town, music director Keith Lockhart will be departing at the end of the current season, his 11th as local maestro-in-residence. But before he goes, he wants to bring a little bit of one of his other gigs to Salt Lake City. Lockhart followed in the footsteps of Arthur Fiedler and John Williams as conductor of the Boston Pops, an orchestra made famous by nearly 30 years of concert broadcasts on PBS. This weekend, Lockhart leads an eclectic “Evening at Pops” evening with the Utah Symphony, including everything from Strauss’ “On the Beautiful Blue Danube,” to the big-band sounds of “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy” and “Moonlight Serenade,” to “The Long and Winding Road” and “Strawberry Fields Forever.” And with a finale of Sousa’s “Stars & Stripes Forever,” Lockhart really aims to go out with a bang.
