During World War II, a fleet of American transport ships, military and civilian, were attacked by German U-boats while crossing the Atlantic. The convoy system, which can be defined as a group of merchant vessels sailing together with naval escort, for mutual security and protection, has a much longer history than sometimes suggested. The month of May 1941 saw the first convoy to receive “end to end” escort (complete coverage for its entire voyage).
The navies of the world that are in the area of the Indian Ocean and Gulf of Aden should put 30 to 40 merchant vessels together and lead them to their port, so the pirates off the coast of Somalia can’t get to the merchant vessels, and the navies can destroy the pirates.
