Give Me That Old-Time Music

By City Weekly Readers
Posted // November 20,2013 -

Scott, you did blow my mind [Staff Box, Nov. 14, City Weekly]. I thought I was the only secular-humanist-rationalist-cum-agnostic who happily attends church. (One meeting only, however, so as to avoid needless violent theological arguments, and I pass on the sacrament—unavoidable pun, sorry—I don’t do ritual.)

I love where I live and have grown to love the people in my immediate area (Riverton), and Sacrament Meeting is pretty much the only contact I have with them. They don’t see me as their “project”; when either they or I initiate conversation, it is pleasant and appreciated. Our stunningly talented organist has a degree in music with an emphasis on piano/organ performance and, more often than not, will do Bach or Chopin as postlude; our choir includes several individuals who sing with outside groups.

Even if I thought the members evangelizing rubes—and I certainly do not—I would go just for the music.
