Include All Voices in Debates

By City Weekly Readers
Posted // October 31,2012 -

With a Democrat and Republican Congress at a 10 percent approval rating, the exclusion of three candidates from political debate is a disservice to those concerned with real solutions to urgent problems. The recent U.S. senatorial debate, televised by KUED and KBYU, excluded candidates with important ideas on climate change, education, drones, citizen rights and the Constitution, to cite a few examples.

Are we going to hand our children an impossible world to live in because we fail to consider solutions beyond business-as-usual? This approach has created the mess we now face. We are long overdue for a move from dominant party politics and must engage in a broad diversity of ideas and strategies.

As a service to present and future generations who long for the best world possible, we challenge the print and broadcast media to include the voices of all candidates running for election as a proper service to citizens of Utah. Burning issues such as those above are too important to be crushed by the stilling of voices by Utah media. We encourage readers to visit the websites below to see their various options, and to vote by conscience rather than party politics.

If you like things as they are, don't bother to check the sites above. If, on the other hand, you are interested in a brighter future for yourself and kids, I highly recommend checking them out.

I would also note that if you aim for the stars, you just might hit the moon. Millions of people, even Utahns, realize that the Ds and Rs are one and the same and are frustrated with them. Hatch has spent himself bring rancid bacon to the state for decades, most recently a "Utah Data Center," making us a bullseye for a first strike nuclear attack, should there ever be one (built, btw, for the purpose of illegally spying on you and yours via any electronic device you have).

Howell, working for IBM for thirty years, largely in managerial capacity, has boasted proudly about shipping jobs overseas by the thousands (as is still happening), while crying about keeping jobs here and calling a senatorial position "sacred" (with, yes, tears in his eyes--I would have lent him an hanke if I had one).

For once, you don't need to pick your poisioin in this Utah U. S. Senatorial race, so much as do a short bit of homework and vote your conscience.

IMHO: Be kind to yourself, to the earth, and to humanity, while you sleep easier knowing you did the right thing.
