Sundays Aren't the Real Reason

By City Weekly Readers
Posted // June 29,2010 - Boy, I wish I’d been here last week, instead of in Boston, when the Utes were “fully invited” to a BCS Conference, where they can continue the quest for perfection. I was saddened to know that the only reason BYU wasn’t invited to the PAC 10/12 (or the Big 12/10) was because they wouldn’t play on Sundays. But it was good for them to stick to their guns, and their faith, and do the right thing!

Except—if you search the newspapers in Texas, Oklahoma, Arizona and California—you learn that the reason the Cougars were not the preferred team from Utah is because BYU is not a research “university,” it concentrates on undergraduate degrees, it has a lousy reputation nationally and it doesn’t bring the Mountain time-zone TV market to the table any more than Utah does.

And does anyone remember the article in Sports Illustrated some years ago about BYU being the most hated school in America?

The Utes have proven themselves athletically, but also academically. Utah has a Nobel Prize winner, BYU doesn’t. Utah has the medical school that invented the artificial heart, BYU doesn’t. Utah has a real law school, BYU turns out a bunch of lawyers. Do I have to explain the difference?

It is not about Sunday. It’s about everyday.

Oh, and don’t forget that Mormons are spending millions of dollars to hate gay people, especially in California. That was a factor, and BYU really messed up on that.

The Big 12 has Baylor, which was forced on them, and they don’t want or need another religious school that can’t compete at their level. A Google search came up with one article that had an official from an Oklahoma school saying that if the Big 12 wanted back into the Mountain time zone, they might look at Air Force, BYU or New Mexico, but he doubted it.

Congratulations, Cougars! You are now as appealing to the Big 12 as New Mexico! Enjoy your stay in the MWC, and hope (pray) that they don’t kick you out, and you end up back in the WAC!

Black Mamba - I never attended either BYU or the U of U so I'm not a fair judge of what goes on in their classrooms. My wife went to the U and said their were some classes she liked and others she did not.

I try not to take the whole BYU/Utah rivalry all that serious either. My only issue is Jeff's double standard in attacking people's immature, ignorant comments by making his own immature, ignorant comments.

I guess nobody's perfect.

Posted // July 17,2010 at 21:06 - Sheesh, sorry about the lack of breaks. First post here. Didn't realize I was typing in HTML before posting. My bad.

Posted // July 8,2010 at 01:02 - Again, you accuse me of being immature by giving back as good as I get? I'm going to take that oppertunity every time! I love it! By being right when I take that shot, I'm a jerk. When your side takes it? It's the right thing to do? You must listen to, "Faux News" and vote republican. Because you don't pay attention. I learned to critically think at the, "U". That's why I'm an athiest! And you have yet to post anything that shows how my comments are, "ignorant". It means, "lacking in knowlage about the subject". I know the subject, college football. Now if you mean, "Ignernt", which in, "Utah Speak" is used for being rude to you because I don't AGREE with you, then you might be right. I am, purposly being, "Ignernt" to you!

Jeff’s letter has a lot of good points, but unfortunately, he clouds his comments with enough arrogant cheap shots that it makes it hard to tell if he’s more interesting building up the U of U or tearing down BYU.

It would be silly, if not flat out ignorant, to dismiss any school of higher learning in the state of Utah as lousy. It is true that the University of Utah has one of the top medical schools, law schools and business schools in the country, but does that somehow make programs offered at BYU, Utah State or Weber State illegitimate? I personally don’t think so.

Jeff dismisses BYU’s law school by saying, “BYU turns out a bunch of lawyers.” Well, according to top-law-schools.com BYU’s law school ranks 42nd in the country, just ahead of the University of Florida and the University of Maryland. Along with that BYU’s business school, according to U.S. News and World Reports, ranks 33rd in the country. True, BYU doesn’t have a medical school, but to dismiss or ridicule its other programs smacks of ignorance.

As a side note, I wonder if Jeff is proud of the fact the University of Utah has distinguished alumni such as LDS Church president Thomas S. Monson and first counselor Henry B. Eyring? Just curious.

I could understand why BYU’s religious affiliation would hinder their chances of getting into the PAC-10, which again is another reason why comparing BYU to the U of U is almost apples and oranges. Each school has a different focus and different rules and standards. Some might say one is better than the other, but that’s their opinion.

Jeff finishes his letter by saying, “Enjoy your stay in the MWC, and hope (pray) that they don’t kick you out, and you end up back in the WAC!”

Is this comment based on some inside information about the Mountain West Conference wanting to throw out one of its top three schools, or is it just Jeff’s parting cheap shot at a school he clearly despises? I’m guessing the latter.

Posted // July 8,2010 at 00:53 - Clark, you are right about one thing. The, "enjoy your stay in the MWC" WAS a parting shot at a school I dispise. Live with it. Oh, and I don't consider your church's leaders, "outstanding" Alumni. I'm not, "proud" of them. I'm an athiest. Making it big in any church, doesn't impress me. But many, many of your church's leaders are, in fact, Utah Men. None of them are scientists. Give up, Clark. In a battle of wits, you are unarmed. You can't win this fight, because we are living in different worlds. To you? Religion is important, and should have meaning. And I should respect yours ike it was, "law" or something. In my world, religion is supersition, and it doesn't mean a thing. I owe you no fealty. So your arguments that I'm not respecting your religion are absolutly right! I don't respect your religion, or any religion! Don't take it personally. Just live with it. This is about football, and that means TV money, and BYU is OUT of the running. End of story.

Posted // July 6,2010 at 09:40 - Thank you, Clark, for your well-reasoned comments. I sensed simple U of U/BYU rivalry in many of the comments from all sides, but like the rivalry, I don't take it too seriously. I attended the U in the 70's and early 80's and you just had a sense of academic freedom at the U. that I know did not exist at the Y during those years. Perhaps still not, I don't know. Seems like every instructor who pops their head up with an independent thought is shown the door at the Y. I know many stalwart, decent Mormons who purposely attended the U of U because they wanted access to a more worldly view and the academic freedom to bring in ideas and information uncensored and unfettered. More of a melting pot of ideas than a small sheet cake with simple sugar icing. Sorry. I mean, for Hell's sake, that's why people go to the Y, to be shielded from outside social and academic influences that might run counter to their beliefs and notions.

Jeff, you said in one comment, "They all hate, but they can't debate."

But then you turn around and make childish comments like, "When what you're being tought is Jr. High level stuff, everyone gets an, "A". Oh, you're from, BYU. I'll type slower."

Also, "You folks who live on, Planet Kolob (Utah County)?"

And, "I understand an archiology professor down there just unearthed a, "McNephi's" double cheesburger wrapper in Belize, proving the, Book of Mormon's value as a history text."

In a nutshell, you claim the higher ground of debate, but when anyone points out something which doesn't fit exactly with the claims in your "letter to the editor", you attack them the same immature matter you accuse others of attacking you.

Posted // July 8,2010 at 00:39 - I'm still waiting for you do debate anything I've said. I do have the higher ground, because I'm right! Now, that being said, I can't counter costic comments with costic comments? It's ok for your team to, "debate" me by calling me a douch bag, but when I counter your points AND throw in my own, "shots", somehow, I'm out of line? I may be guilty of sinking to YOUR level, but I'm floating on the raft of being right, and you can't stand it.

I LOVE the HATE from the, "But Your Uneducated" crowd! I'm a douch bag? Really? They all hate, but they can't debate! They don't counter my arguments, they just make up shit, and expect us to believe it. While I'm enjoying the sun shine and beaches, you, "cougars" will be in, Laramie in November. My wife, a BYU graduate, who grew up in, "The Bay Area" is looking forward to our trips there every year to see the Utes play at Stanford, or Cal. This is great for the whole STATE of UTAH. You folks who live on, Planet Kolob (Utah County)? Not so much. Call me everything in the book you can think of. I don't care. We are SO over you!

Posted // July 2,2010 at 21:21 - You're right, BM. I am probably taking shots at them when they're down. I understand an archiology professor down there just unearthed a, "McNephi's" double cheesburger wrapper in Belize, proving the, Book of Mormon's value as a history text. Boy, I expected to get hate mail, but I thought it would be a little more thought out regarding my, "article". Does no one really understand how, The Fourth Estate works in this state?

Posted // July 2,2010 at 10:13 - Now, Jeff, you know and I know that these guys are upset and hurt. Let's show them a form of love they can only theorize exists and forgive them. I have pride in graduating from the U of U, but my eternal salvation and the ability to spend eternity floating "up there" somewhere with Granny wasn't connected to my degree, so I understand and try to appreciate the tremendous pressure that must come from defending your religion and your school at the same time. I'm sure Catholics feel the same way about Notre Dame and vacuous, shallow idiots feel the same way about Bob Jones pretend-"University." And let's not sell BYU short on academics. After all, the professor who thinks 9-11 was an inside job, courtesy the Bush Adminstration, taught there for years.
