Drink the Wine, Eat the Beer

By City Weekly Readers
Posted // January 6,2010 - We all know the benefits of reducing the world’s dependence on petroleum —everything from foreign relations to the environment. What can we do to help?

I believe we can make a difference, beginning with how we eat. For example, we know cattle are fed grain to fatten them before slaughter. I am willing to pay more for meat that has been raised on grass. It takes fossil fuel and water to grow the grain—and more importantly, it takes food that could go to needy people.

Second, I believe that if we want to drink, we can drink wine rather than beer (or distilled beer). Beer is made from grain; wine is made from fruit. We literally have so much fruit, we have berries falling on the sidewalk—this is potential wine. Let us give the grain to the needy.
