More works on paper—I’m lovin’ it! And, it can be so nice to see them right on the wall, unframed and raw, letting your eyes crawl right over their subtle surface.
Wren Ross’ July show at Nobrow is a collection of folky, washy, Darger-esque works on paper that are delightful and strange, both detailed and loose. It is a nice accompaniment, and highlight, to this month’s other excellent shows along a similar path. Washes that create landscape, and characters that create a vague narrative, lead to somewhat sparsely composed, yet magically packed, works.
Some leave expanses of paper, and the action occurs between distant painted objects—the figures peering out of drippy, cloudy forms. Others are larger, fuller dreamscapes with delicately cut paper, and hidden characters are detectable only upon closer inspection. The process is also evident; they are fluid, open works that let paint run and allow smudged line to be a part of the finished product.
