What’s better than having a birthday? Having a birthday and a pre-birthday, which is what I’ve considered Record Store Day to be for me during its six-year history. More than 700 independently owned record stores nationwide will be participating in the April 20 celebration of music, with in-store performances and special and rare releases—often on vinyl. I’ll be celebrating getting one more year’s worth of “distinguished” April 28 by buying myself something awesome. This year, I’ll be scouting shelves for a limited-edition 10th-anniversary re-release of Elephant by The White Stripes, one of my favorite bands.

Speaking of the indie-rock girl/boy duo, White Stripes vocalist and record store/label owner Jack White is this year’s Record Store Day “ambassador,” and perfectly summed up the beauty and importance of experiencing music on vinyl in a statement on RecordStoreDay.com. “We need to re-educate ourselves about human interaction and the different between downloading a track on a computer and … getting turned on to music that you can hold in your hands and share with others,” he says.

Here’s a list of what local music stores have happening this Record Store Day. For lists of exclusive Record Store Day releases you can treat yo’self to (and a hilariously noneducational video about how records are made, featuring White himself), visit RecordStoreDay.com.

Graywhale, multiple locations, Fatfin.com
Graywhale’s Ogden, Bountiful, University of Utah, West Jordan and Taylorsville locations will all feature showcases of local bands. The Sandy location will be turned into a hang-out-with-friends podcast party—equipped with playable video-game consoles and free drinks and snacks—hosted by the crew of local podcast Out of Our System. Turntables, headphones, toys and other accessories will be marked down, and Graywhale Record Store Day T-shirts will be available for $10. Three exclusive art prints will be available to purchase as well, by artists Ben Hibshman, Anthony Lucero and Travis Bone (FurTurtle.com). All Graywhale locations will open at 8 a.m. on Record Store Day for everyone. This will also be a one-day-only opportunity to buy kick-off Crucial Fest 3 tickets for only $20.
