Repertory Dance Theatre: Place: Dancing the Green Map

Two-dimensional icons are given kinetic life through the efforts of Repertory Dance Theatre. Green Map’s (GreenMap.org) place-identifying icons are used in more than 600 cities and counties to chart points of sustainable living, nature, culture and society within a community. RDT has enhanced the process by creating a corresponding dance language for each icon, which the company is using to educate the public—specifically, students—and craft an evening of eco-friendly dance.

New York City-based choreographer Zvi Gotheiner, along with composer Scott Killian and nine RDT dancers, initially created 12 “movement essays.” Now, a year later, there are 24, including pieces for “Wetlands,” “Public Transportation,” “Oil and Gas.” Each is one to five minutes in length. RDT dancers bring these pieces to public and private elementary to high schools for mapping and artistic activities. The students use RDT’s dances as building blocks to choreograph their own performances, while also creating Green Maps of their community. “When doing this, the students—and grown-ups, too—really see their surroundings with new eyes,” says executive director Linda Smith. The end goal is to complete an intuitive map for Salt Lake County.

Place is not only a creative introduction to RDT’s Green Maps but also a stand-alone dance performance. “Our essays fit together in a seamless way during the concert,” Smith says. “The whole thing is like a journey.”

In the lobby before and after each performance, RDT will host an open house for local sustainability focused businesses and nonprofits.
