Limericks will live on, corned beef and cabbage will satisfy taste buds and the Emerald Isle’s heritage will be toasted. Lo, the annual St. Patrick’s Day parade was saved from extinction, thanks to February’s benefit concert. So, the tradition continues, as it has since 1978. Cheers to the Hibernian Society of Utah!

Mid-March means it’s time to dust off the green-sequined sport coat, break out the top hat and color some brews—all in preparation for Saturday’s festivities, which will launch at 8:30 a.m. with the Leprechaun Lope, a 5K run starting at Capitol Hill. Then, for the rest of us, it’s time to march.

Salt Lake City isn’t Boston or Chicago, but our humble parade is worth the 364 days of waiting. It starts at 10 a.m. at the north end of The Gateway and winds down to the post-parade Siamsa, this year at the Gateway Grand Hall. Anyone can join in, from sponsors (City Weekly is one) to families to revelers. This year’s theme is “If You’re Irish,” but on Saint Patrick’s Day, folks come in all varieties of Irish: full-blooded, dyedin-the-wool, just a wee pinch or simply Irish at heart.

The Siamsa will feature bands Swagger, The Heathen Highlanders and others, with stages indoors and out. Drinks and cheer will abound. Irishman Oscar Wilde said it best: “I can resist anything except temptation.” Let loose and be safe.

St. Patrick’s Day Parade @ 400 W. 200 North, travels through The Gateway, March 13, 10 a.m. Post-parade Siamsa @ Gateway Grand Hall, 90 S. 400 West. IrishInUtah.org
