The oral tradition of telling tales is older than recorded human history and a beloved pastime that unites generations. The prestigious Timpanogos Storytelling Festival, which attracts around 30,000 attendees and is the largest festival of its kind in the West, pays homage to the enduring legacy of stories.

An annual Labor Day tradition now in its 21st year, the Timpanogos Storytelling Festival showcases the talent of professional storytellers from around the world (Antonio Sacre is pictured)—as well as precocious “youth tellers”—in a beautiful outdoor setting in Provo Canyon. Daytime readings and evening events, including “Bedtime Stories,” “Shivers in the Night” and the “Last Laugh,” are scheduled.

The storytelling celebration also includes musical performances from rock, big band, folk, country and alternative artists. Kids are invited to unleash their inner artists and create wheel-thrown or hand-fashioned souvenir clay pots with guidance from master potters. In addition, the first festival quilt-block-and-story shop hop is being introduced.

The festival features storytelling workshops on crafting, telling and preserving stories at the Orem Public Library. Workshop admission is not included in the event ticket price and must be purchased separately.

With tales of peril and triumph, love and loss, meekness and prowess, the Timpanogos Storytelling Festival serves up a weekend of merriment and inspiration and ensures the continued vitality of our most treasured oral art form.

Timpanogos Storytelling Festival @ Mt. Timpanogos Park (one mile up Provo Canyon) and other locations in Orem, 801-229-7436, Sept. 2-4, $40 adult, $25 child. Full schedule at TimpFest.org
