The Importance of Being Earnest

THURSDAY 12.31

By Aimee Larsen Stoddard
Posted // December 30,2009 -

Like an unmentionable floating in the punch bowl, Oscar Wilde is known as much for offending highbrow Victorian sensibilities as he is for his cleverly satirical plays and other writings. Opening on New Year’s Eve at the Hale Centre Theatre, The Importance of Being Earnest—aptly subtitled A Trivial Comedy for Serious People—pokes fun at genteel Victorian society. A full-blown celebration, complete with refreshments from Iron Gate Grill, music from the band Lokalgrown, a New Year’s countdown accentuated by a singing of “Auld Lang Syne,” as well as party hats and noisemakers, will add to the merriment.

Opening night of Wilde’s most famous play, which will run through Feb. 6, is guaranteed to deliver a night of jolly good chuckles. After all, how could a play that was written by a disturber of the status quo—and that calls out the full-of-themselves upper crust—be anything but irresistibly delightful?
