Want to forgo the usual drunken toasts and slobbery kisses and opt instead for a 3.1-mile jaunt around Sugar House Park to ring in the New Year? Die-hard, hardy and soft-in-the-head runners take pride in participating in the annual Beat the New Year 5K, organized by the Salt Lake City Track Club. As it is never cancelled on account of weather, snow flurries and below-freezing temps are no obstacles.
The race starts at 11:30 p.m. sharp, and plaques are given to all runners who cross the finish line before midnight. A pre-race raffle and awards for Best Costumes, C-c-coldest Runners and Fastest Runners add to the festivities. In past years, runners have donned itty-bitty Speedos and bikinis, prisoner uniforms and hot dog costumes. Anything goes.
In its 32nd year, the Beat the New Year run can certainly get your 2010 off on the right foot—and it’s hard to beat that.
