Great Salt Lake Bird Festival

Thursday, May 14

The Great Salt Lake Bird Festival is exactly what you might imagine—just think all things avian. There will be bird workshops such as birdhouse building and live bird handling, combined with bird field trips lead by experts in birding.

In fact, one such trip is a marathon birding session lasting from 6 a.m. until 10 p.m., in which the goal is to spot as many different bird species in their natural habitats as seemingly possible. Others include excursions to Antelope Island and an Owl Prowl in Utah County, among many others. There will also be a lecture by author Scott Weidensaul, who is an active field researcher, naturist and avid birder—specializing in birds of prey and hummingbirds—with several dozen bird books to his name. His most recent, Of a Feather: A Brief History of American Birding, makes him a perfect keynote speaker for this year’s feathery festival.
