As beautiful as the natural environment is in Utah, there’s something to be said about the sight of abandoned vehicles and industrial equipment left to rot in, on and around the landscape. Such striking juxtaposition of man-made degradation wantonly discarded within the natural world provides a unique aesthetic, in turn becoming fruitful fodder for Utah native/painter Kevin Hogge.
“I’m interested in the influences that the natural world and the man-made world are having on each other,” explains Hogge. “The passing of time is inevitably molding both, creating a relationship as they change during a common period of time.”
All those decaying jalopies and deteriorating farm tractors quickly succumbing to the sheer force of a fecund environment, depicted by Hogge with such vivid use of color, are really a depiction of the core struggle of co-existence.
