After four days of staking out cheesesteaks in Philly—at Jim’s, Pat’s, Geno’s and Tony Luke’s—my cheesy palate was finely tuned. So, the day after I returned from back East, I decided to check out a place in South Jordan that Lori, one of my trusted foodie informants, had been urging me to visit: DP Cheesesteaks. I’m glad I did.
There are other good Philly-style cheesesteaks in Utah. But frankly, nothing I’ve tried comes close to this one. A DP (stands for “Downtown Philly”) cheesesteak is on par—and I’m not blowing steak smoke here—with the best The City of Brotherly Love has to offer. In fact, I think a DP Cheesesteak is actually better than Geno’s, and more meaty than Pat’s, where they seem to be skimping on the steak lately. If you’ve ever had a Jim’s cheesesteak from Philly’s South Street and loved it, then you’re also gonna love DP’s.
What makes DP’s Utah’s cheesesteak champ? First, a DP cheesesteak starts out with sliced-to-order rib-eye steak, just like the big boys. Second, you can get a DP cheesesteak slathered with Cheez Whiz (there’s also American or Provolone for wimps), just like you would in Philly. Third: the bread. It’s true that there’s no substitute for the Amoroso rolls used for cheesesteaks in Philly. However, the Stoneground Bakery rolls used at DP Cheesesteaks are awfully good—a bit denser and more rustic than Amoroso’s, but an excellent roll nonetheless. And DP stuffs those rolls to the hilt with perfectly grilled and chopped steak.
Anyone homesick for Philadelphia will appreciate that DP’s also sells Tastykakes, Birch Beer and Herr’s potato chips. Plus, they take credit cards—something the kings of Philly cheesesteaks won’t do.

I am impressed KutztownKing, that was a very good comeback. I know that Tony's Cheesesteaks are not how you make them out to be. Tony produces a very good sandwich, along with other sandwich joints in the valley.
I truly hope that individuals looking for a good place to eat here and there, give Tony's a try. Iknow that they will not be disapointed at the quality of food and service.
I have excepted that fact that you have made your opinion on this. And you are entitled to do so. But let others make an opinion themselves.
"I am guessing this comment was from the owner of Tony's, seeing as it is a giant ad for his place. I tried it today anyway and was less than impressed. Normally I wouldn't be bugged but I skipped my normal Monday trip to the DP and went to Tony's instead. The 10" wasn't nearly as filling as DP's 9 inch and probably not even DP's 6 inch. I suppose that being born in Philly doesn't automatically mean you can make a cheesesteak, besides, DP's owner is from Lancaster, 20 minutes outside of Philly, close enough."
To KutztownKing,
just for the record, I am not the owner of Tony's, but I do know the guy, and thought I would help spread the word about his shop by making a couple comments. Anyway, like I have said before no disrespect to Dp, Cause I love their sandwiches, and will continue to buy them in the future (along with Tony's) but do you know that feeling when you are done eating at DP? that full, stuffed, cant walk feelling? Well, thats because you are eating a whole lot of BREAD! Take a look next time you go in.. their roles are very tasty.. but very large as well. I have traveled back east several times for buisness trips, and actually had a REAL cheesesteak before. Its not about how big the sandwich is, its about the sandwich hitting the spot, and satisfying your urg. NOT feeling regret for eating. And Tony's sandwiches hit the spot beautifully. And I dont have the feeling that my pants are going to burst. So next time you are in the area, give it another try, and hopefully you will notice those differences.
oh and I by the way the owner of DP was BORN in Lancaster.. He did not grow up and spend most of his life in Philly. TONY DID! many of those years making cheesesteaks. You can ask him yourself, next time you come in.
Disgusting! The meat was EXACTLY like that found a Hot Pocket Philly Cheese steak, The mushrooms were canned and the onions were slimy, thin shavings. And I ordered a Traditional. They have weird concoctions that would never be Philly affiliated as well on the menu. I see them going out of business in 4 months or less. I took a few bites and threw the rest away. I have no words for how bad this food was. It bums me out when people false advertise. Especially when they claim to be like the CLASSICS.
