There is much afoot at the Waldorf Astoria Park City (2100 Frostwood Drive) for this ski season, including a build-your-own-gingerbread-house event for kids Dec. 22-23, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. For $25, kids of all ages can learn to build and accessorize their very own gingerbread house, with an array of candies and icings, assisted by the Slopes restaurant culinary team. Call 435-647-5566 to reserve your child’s spot.

New additions to the Waldorf also include the debut of Powder Ice Lounge, featuring a 14-foot bar made of carved ice with ice furniture where guests (starting at $45 per person) will don cozy fur blankets while sipping Champagne by the bottle, glass or flight, with passed hors d’oeuvres and live entertainment. Sounds decadent. Powder restaurant is also the Waldorf’s new spot for casual dining and drinks—a good place to meet up for après ski, breakfast, lunch or a relaxed dinner. Oh My: Oh Mai + Black Sheep!
Urbanspoon released its list of “America’s Most Popular New Restaurants” for 2012, and guess what? Two Utah eateries made the cut, among a mere 50 restaurants selected from all those that opened nationwide this year, spanning 37 metropolitan areas in 22 states. Congratulations to Salt Lake City’s Oh Mai Vietnamese Sandwich Kitchen (3425 S. State, 801-467-6882; 6093 S. Highland Drive, Holladay, 801-277-9888, OhMaiSandwich.com) and Provo’s Black Sheep Cafe (19 N. University Ave., 801-607-2485, Facebook.com/BlackSheepCafe), the two Utah winners. Black Sheep Cafe specializes in American Indian fare such as Navajo tacos, fry bread and blue-corn mush, along with more modern dishes like the goat burger, Southwestern street corn and orange-habanero creme brulee. Oh Mai features, of course, Vietnamese sandwiches like the trendiest sammy of the year, banh mi, along with pho, rice dishes (com dia), noodles (bun), salads and more. You haven’t lived until you’ve had their spicy beef short rib (bo dai han) sandwich.
