Tapas Showdown, Ruth's Chris, Kathmandu

Tapas Showdown
On Thursday, March 4, at 6:30 p.m., a tapas “showdown” will take place at the Viking Cooking School/Kimball Distributing (2233 S. 300 East) to benefit the Salt Lake City YWCA’s mission of “eliminating racism, empowering women, and promoting peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all.” Three chefs—Phelix Gardner from the Wild Grape Bistro, Meditrina’s Jen Gilroy and Metropolitan’s Justin Shifflett—will face off to cook an assortment of tapas, which will be judged by a celebrity panel. The judges include Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker, Salt Lake Magazine’s Mary Malouf, Log Haven executive chef Dave Jones and master of ceremonies, KUTV’s chef Brian Woolley. Tickets (which includes a total of nine tapas) for the event are $50, with an optional additional $15 for wine pairings. Reserve tickets at YWCA.com or phone 801-537-8614.

Ruth Returns
Steak lovers will be happy to learn that Ruth’s Chris Steak House is returning to Salt Lake City after a brief absence. A lease has been signed, and the new 9000-square-foot Ruth’s Chris will be located in the former Chase Bank building at 272 S. West Temple. Ruth’s Chris co-owner/franchisee Mark Robbins says, “People have been telling us how much they love the Ruth’s Chris dining experience and we are excited to bring the ‘sizzle’ of prime beef back to Salt Lake.” The opening for the restaurant is slated for spring, and Ruth’s Chris Steak House will create approximately 75 new local jobs. Goin’ to Kathmandu
A new Indian and Nepali restaurant, Kathmandu, has opened in Sugar House at 3142 S. Highland Drive, operated by former employees of the Himalayan Kitchen, but no longer affiliated with that restaurant. Featured menu items include momos and chili chicken. I received the following note from the owners of Kathmandu, regarding my blurb about their restaurant in Food Matters. They asked for the followng correction:

"I am writing to you about the piece on The Kathmandu you wrote on 26th volume of City Weekly. (March 4, 2010, No. 42). This piece is on page 28. In the piece, you mention that the restaurant is operated by former employees of Himalayan Kitchen. This is inaccurate and misleading as the owners of this restaurant were the former Owners of Himalayan Kitchen. I would be very grateful if you could correct this and re-print this piece."
