My first encounter with DanceBrazil entailed being stupefied by a performance at NYC’s Museum of Natural History. I was so completely enthralled with the capoeira I witnessed during the performance that I went on to study the Brazilian marshal art with DanceBrazil founder and renowned capoeira mestre Jelon Vieira, both in New York and Brazil.

Now, some 25 years later, this marvelous troupe is appearing at Kingsbury Hall in a show that fuses Afro-Brazilian movement and music with modern dance and the rapid-fire acrobatics of capoeira. Since its founding in 1977, DanceBrazil has thrilled audiences worldwide. The current show includes Fluxo & Refluxo, a dance piece celebrating the roots of African culture growing deep within Brazilian culture, and Banguela, which refers to the special rhythm played during the spiritual preparation that capoeiristas undertake before the intricate and dangerous roda (game or contest) itself. Prepare to be knocked out by the sights, sounds and energy of DanceBrazil.

DanceBrazil @ Kingsbury Hall, 1395 E. Presidents Circle, 801-581-7100, Feb. 26, 7:30 p.m. KingsburyHall.org
