International sausages for winter

Winter can be miserable, but there are a few hallmarks of the season that make it bearable—scarves, skiing, snowflakes, holiday lights, hot chocolate and … sausages?

Well, yes. Sugar House’s World Dog food cart, open since July, isn’t hanging up the tongs even as the temperatures drop. The cart is one of the few staying open all season, with a winter menu that includes cocoa and hot soup. Tomato bisque is offered daily, with occasional specialty soups—like vegan sweet-potato and red-curry, made with coconut milk.

But the cart’s specialty is the dogs—and the owner isn’t just some Joe who wanted to capitalize on the food-cart trend. Joe Ballato has been cooking for more than 20 years; he went to culinary school in New York City and worked as the sous chef at the Grand America. He was originally looking to open a brick-and-mortar restaurant but found the long leases off-putting, so he decided to open a cart and get started right away.

Ballato asked Paul Colosimo of Colosimo’s Sausage to create some specialty sausages for the cart. When combined with Ballato’s culinary skills and creative topping combinations, these high-quality sausages are tempting enough to lure in even those who don’t consider themselves hot-dog eaters. Take The Greek for example—it’s a Greek-style (casing-less, with garlic and herbs) sausage, with Roma tomatoes, Kalamata olives, feta cheese and tzatziki. Or The Buffalo—chicken sausage, carrot & celery slaw, blue cheese and Buffalo wing sauce. Nine specialty dogs are offered, including a tofu dog; all are inspired by regional American and international flavors.

All menu items are $5 or under, with regular hot dogs with ketchup, mustard and relish for just $1 on Mondays.
