On your mark, get set, go! It’s that time of year again to dust off the old shopping cart, pull out the Halloween costume circa 1999 and gear up for the second annual Salt Lake Urban Iditarod. Somewhat similar (but not really) to the Alaskan Iditarod, the Urban Iditarod uses Homo sapiens instead of Canis lupis familiaris, shopping carts instead of sleds and the streets of downtown Salt Lake instead of Alaskan tundra. Teams of barking humans, united in wacky uniforms, race around the Salt Lake Valley.

The course is 4 miles long with service stops along the way—thirsty teams will need refueling. The rules are simple. Teams must consist of five or more humans (no dogs). All teams must obey traffic laws. No shortcuts, stray humans or stray carts littering the streets after the race. Snow, sleet or rain, the race will go on—shopping carts not included.
