Verboten

Posted // June 29,2007 -

We were surprised to discover the following notice posted on the Salt Lake City government's Website: "We cannot answer inquiries about missing persons, genealogy, or non-City employment opportunities."

Wondering whether this list of forbidden topics changes periodically, and imagining the practical jokers at 451 S. State at those early-morning meetings ("OK, how about this: Today we'll refuse to talk about English muffins, modern architecture or parking fines."), we watched the page for a few days. As of June 26, however, the list remains unchanged.

We can only imagine that city receptionists were, at some point, so besieged by questions from confused genealogists that they were unable to complete their assigned tasks.

So, heads up: If you're barking up your family tree, you'd be well advised to direct inquiries to the LDS Church's Family History Library at 35 N. West Temple.

But, whatever you do, don't get all confused and start asking the nice folks there a bunch of dumb questions about parking fines.
