nArtists were selected by an advisory committee made up of supporters of the local scene including record label owners, promoters, members of the media, club owners, producers, engineers and other figures who are deeply invested in Utah music.
n
nEach committee member selected around 25-30 artists which were then tallied and entered into a database to determine the top 30, cumulatively.
n
nThese artists were chosen not just based on talent, but on how active they were in getting their music out and also participating in the community this year.

Posted // January 29,2009 at 04:09 Thank God for CW, they really do their best to support local music. Many people outside of the paper also had a hand in picking the top 30 and to be concidered bands had to be actively working. Touring, putting out CD’s, playing locally. So that’s good. I would rather see judges than texting because, not everyone has a cell phone or internet access. Plus many of the shows are at bars and that leaves out people under 21. Put all that together and that’s a lot of people who can not participate in voting. Perhaps next year that will be taken into concideration.

Posted // January 27,2009 at 10:50 The great irony is that the bands that win these things are never very good and often it is this type of victory which makes people resent the crappiness and arrogance of the victor. It’s beautiful in a sick way.nnI happen to be in one of the top 30 chosen bands and I can tell you that most of my favorites, bands much more deserving than mine, are not on the list. Also, I’m happy to say that none of my compatriots take this sort of thing seriously at all. It’s just another night at the bar.nnSure $3,000 would be nice and it’s always fun to get your picture in the paper, but the idea of music as a competition is fundamentally wrong.nnPeace.
