University of Utah Multi-Discplinary Design

Posted // June 21,2013 -

The Multi-Disciplinary Design Program [MDD] is housed in the School of Architecture at the University of Utah. This new program now o ers a Bachelors of Science in Design and students are trained in a rigorous methodology for solving problems and making through an iterative process. The MDD program is dedicated to designing products, processes and experiences utilizing a human centered design process that improve the quality of individual lives. This team is comprised of MDD students and faculty. We was interested in going beyond just wrapping the box with graphics and literally ‘breaking out’ the form of the iconic object that we all recognize throughout the city. After multiple possible solutions, many that were quite intricate, the team decided to pursue the most simple solution possible. This design is inspired by a type of ship camouflage circa World War 1 called Dazzle. Dazzle does not intend to conceal an object, but instead to make it di cult to determine a target’s range, heading, speed and exact form, thereby making it hard to hit. In applying it to the City Weekly box, we hope to o er a di erent perspective on the 3-dimensional form of what is otherwise a very simple rectangular block.
