The Salt Lake City Main Library ventures outside the book binding to host events to enhance the lives of residents. One person behind this goal is Andrew Shaw.

Each month, Shaw organizes Music @ Main, a sometimes edgy concert series featuring local artists. He tries to incorporate bands that play in the downtown neighborhood while including music to showcase the diversity of the community. Shaw thought the city library (210 E. 400 South, SLCPL.org) would be the perfect venue for concerts, as it creates a setting where music doesn’t become background noise as it often does when the concerts are held in bars or nightclubs. With the Music @ Main concerts, artists are recognized as musicians, not just entertainers, and the audience can be more involved.

As for Shaw’s own career in the music world, where he is known as The Platte, he is writing the score for a local independent film, Must Come Down, written and directed by Kenny Riches. While celebrating his second anniversary with his wife, local artist Mary Toscano, in fall 2010, he set goals for his career in 2011: either working with crazy sound installations or driving full force into a dancy pop band sound. He hasn’t decided which it will be, but regardless, we can expect great things from The Platte and the impressive selection of artists at Music @ Main.
