Hits & Misses | Rocky Mountain Power, Liquor Money & Tough Guy Jason Chaffetz

width=69 Power Tantrum
Rocky Mountain Power didn’t get to jack up electricity rates as much as it wanted so it’s taking its marbles and going home. The power company announced that, beginning Sept. 15, it will stop authorizing overtime for employees to restore power outages and cut back on customer service. Eventually, Rocky Mountain warned it would have to turn off the lights. All this because state regulators determined the power company should get to hike rates by $33.4 million, instead of the $74.4 million it wanted. (Utah’s official consumer watchdog had recommended a price hike four times smaller than the approved increase.) The scare tactics really weren’t necessary. The company’s friends in the Legislature already are lining up to put the squeeze on regulators and get Rocky Mountain its money.

width=69Home Run
With profits from state liquor stores expanding, advocates for the poor are proposing using some of the money to ensure Utah’s working poor have a place to live. The Utah Poverty Partnership will present the idea to state lawmakers Sept. 17. For thousands of Utah low-wage earners, paychecks aren’t keeping pace with the price of housing. State housing officials estimate Utah must add thousands of low-income rental properties each year to meet demand. While Utah already has a program that helps renovate and build affordable apartments, the Olene Walker Housing Loan Fund is short on cash. Finding a new source of revenue for the fund now would let Utah take advantage of a just-launched federal program that offers states matching money to expand rental housing.

width=69Internment Camps
Someone should tell 3rd Congressional District candidate Jason Chaffetz that he already beat soft-on-immigration Congressman Chris Cannon in the Republican primary. Chaffetz’s bid to be a tough guy has reached absurd levels. He proposes rounding up undocumented immigrants and holding them in tent cities surrounded by barbed wire. He says he got the idea from “America’s Toughest Sheriff” Joe Arpaio of Maricopa County, Ariz., whose notorious prison practices have brought condemnation from Amnesty International. The Chaffetz immigration plan was lambasted by California Rep. Mike Honda, who spent part of his childhood in a World War II internment camp for Japanese Americans. Honda called Chaffetz’s tent city an “odious reminder [of] a disgraceful chapter in U.S. history” that should be “offensive and embarrassing to all Americans.”

This was a smear campaign. Jason never did call for Tent Cities. He did use the word tent. I can't believe someone would run and loose an election expecting people to believe this, and that City Weekly would as well is amazing. Where was the research on this one.

There are people that want to round up all 12 million illegals, and are mad that Jason DOESN'T want to do that. Jason only wanted facilities where the government wouldn't have to catch and release felons. There are 600,000 they have let go. We wouldn't have to build facilities for that many, as we just need a temporary facility for convicted criminals, to be held prior to deportation.

There are people that don't want anyone new moving in, where Jason wants to fix LEGAL immigration so it doesn't take so long to legally come here.

There are people that think providing any temporary worker visa is wrong, where Jason agrees it is a great way to bring people out of the shadows, get rid of the fake IDs, but this in NO WAY provides a pathway to citizenship in front of those wanting to immigrate who have followed the rules.

Posted // March 12,2009 at 15:54 Jason Chaffetz is a Nazi. He has a reputation of being heartless and sloppy, he leaves a mess where ever he goes. Utah voted him in to protect their taxes and benefits from going to the immigrants. They forget they ARE the immigrants, who will have the last laugh after Cheffetz five minutes of fame is up!!!!

Posted // September 12,2008 at 15:39 I am surprised at the negative and distorted press lately re: Jason Chaffetz. I am supporting Jason, it is time the truth about his position be supported as well.nnWhy would a California Representative, one that is sponsoring a bill with Senator Clinton to spend $600,000,000 on immigrants to this country, target Jason Chaffetz with information provided to him by La Raza?

Posted // September 11,2008 at 09:47 There goes arc again trying in vain to cover for her buddy Chaffetz. The problem is arc is that by defending a racist and a liar, you have sunk to his depth and become a liar yourself. nnNow you are changing your story. What, did all of you freak Chaffetz supporters have a meeting to sort your lies, distortions, and half-truths? nnJust because a racist doesn’t know he’s a racist doesn’t mean he’s not a racist.

Posted // September 11,2008 at 04:18 Your MISS missed. You have not stated Chaffetz’ comments or plans correctly.nnOur soldiers did not break our laws and are not convicted felons. Note the difference?nnRestructure legal immigration to reduce, if not eliminate the bureaucracy, confusion, and stagnation in the current process of becoming a legal citizen of the United States. I believe the current process is the prime cause for the problems we face with illegal immigration. Education, employment, financial aid, food stamps, and medical care are all idyllic benefits we, as citizens, have an opportunity to benefit from. These same benefits should not be lavished on those who are in our country illegally. They do not have the rights; not inherent rights or implied rights, or the rights of the United States citizenship they refuse to obtain. Fix legal immigration first, then slam a foot down hard against those here illegally. nnIncarcerate criminals, all convicted criminals in this country. Incarcerate them regardless of ethnicity. Incarcerate them in tent facilities or caves or within concrete walls, I don’t really care, but incarcerate them! Turning a criminal back into society or simply dropping an illegal alien off across our border enabling their immediate and unrepentant return, on the basis of overcrowded courts and prisons is ridiculously ineffective.
