Park City Food & Wine Classic

Still Classic: Wine, food, seminars and more at the Park City Food & Wine Classic.

Posted // June 29,2010 - The dovetailing of food and wine is a time-honored tradition. And, from July 8-10 in Park City, it’ll be the modus operandi as the annual Park City Food & Wine Classic returns to the ski town. The is the sixth Classic—each year it gets bigger—and this year’s event will feature more than 500 wines, vintner dinners, world-class cuisine, chefs, winemakers, seminars, outdoor activities, auctions and more. The Park City Food & Wine Classic to date has raised more than $100,000 for local charities and, in 2010, will support the People’s Health Clinic and The Park City Foundation. Five percent of all tickets sales to Classic events, and all auction proceeds will benefit those nonprofit organizations. Prices for the Classic range from $20 for individual tickets to packages starting at $225. For three days, the world is your oyster.

The 2010 Classic kicks off on Thursday evening with a Grand Tasting Celebration ($110) at Red Pine Lodge—a scenic gondola ride from the base of The Canyons resort. The kick-off will feature a mix of reserve wines along with everyday selections, food, live entertainment and an opportunity to chat one-on-one with winemakers and other industry experts.

Friday features more than a dozen wine, sake, coffee and whiskey-tasting seminars, as well as some fun outdoor activities. “Tight Lines and Fine Wines” ($300) will combine fly-fishing and award-winning wines, along with a gourmet lunch at Victory Ranch, hosted by Kathleen Mcleod of Silver Oak Winery. “Mud Sweat and Cheers” ($85) at Stein Eriksen Lodge mixes mountain biking, wine and a gourmet lunch at Stein’s, featuring chef Zane Holmquist and Rob Fisher of Fisher Vineyards. Other tempting Friday events include a horseback ride to a yurt lunch at The Canyons ($125), a tour of Spanish wines ($45), whiskey tasting at High West Distillery ($45), sake and sushi-making at Shabu ($55) and a Master Ceviche Class ($40) hosted by Top Chef Master Doug Rodriguez, the global godfather of Nuevo Latino cuisine. And then, beginning at 4 p.m. on Friday, attendees can meander Main Street for the Stroll of Park City Grand Tasting ($70), with wines and food hosted at various locations up and down Main.

Saturday’s highlights include “Off the Hook” ($300) with mimosas, bloody Marys, a gourmet lunch and fishing, a cooking seminar with chef Jason Kieffer ($75) to benefit the Peoples Health Clinic, a Riedel glassware seminar ($85), “Chocolate and Wine” ($55) and “Secrets of Wine and Food Pairings” ($65) taught by Ron Mumford, master sommelier and wine director for Southern Wine & Spirits of Las Vegas. You can also be “Winemaker for a Day” ($50) learning the winemaking process and how to blend wines or discover the “World’s Greatest Wine Values” ($30) with Vine Lore’s (and City Weekly contributor) Gus Magann. This sampling merely scratches the surface of the extensive array of seminars and tastings being offered during the Classic.

The big-daddy wine event of the weekend is, of course, the “Toast of Park City Grand Tasting” ($80) held outside at The Forum at The Canyons Saturday afternoon. It features tastings of hundreds of wines and spirits, the music of Joy & Eric, and a bounty of foods from area restaurants. Bring your sunscreen. And, if you’re not totally cooked after the Grand Tasting, head up the road to Spruce for “Spruce on Fire” ($85) featuring poolside cocktails at the Waldorf Astoria, live entertainment, wine, beer and grilled food from Spruce’s award-winning chef Mark Sullivan.
