Weeds, Growers & Dogs Playing Poker

By Eric S. Peterson
Sometimes, activism is as simple as yard work—a dirty job that just has to get done. This summer, get a little sun with your activism by volunteering to pull noxious weeds out of local canyons. Later, develop your own personal green skills by learning ways to store your garden’s harvest so it will last well into the winter. Finally, don’t miss an opportunity to party Vegas style with your dog at Canine Casino night.

Weed Warriors
Thursdays through Aug. 26
Have you got what it takes to be a weed warrior? OK, let’s be more specific— are you ready to help protect your canyons by volunteering to battle invasive weed species? If so, join the Cottonwood Canyons Foundation every Thursday this summer. Excursions will hit Mill Creek and Big and Little Cottonwood canyons. Organizers will provide training and tools, but volunteers need to bring their own sunscreen, water and work clothes.

Storing & Using What You Grow
Saturday, June 12
Growing your own produce is a small gesture toward a much healthier lifestyle, for you and the planet. But what do you do with your harvest when you’ve eaten your fill? Learn how to make that bounty last at this free workshop about storing garden goodies, courtesy of Wasatch Community Gardens. Class cost is $10.
