Thornton Wilder’s 1938 play Our Town chronicles a New England community still making the transition from 19th-century to 20th-century American life. But, the thousands of stage and screen interpretations over the past 70 years—Pioneer Theatre Company’s current production being only the most recent—continue to mine the story’s universal truths of love, interconnectedness and loss. Anderson Matthews plays the Stage Manager, the omniscient figure who observes the young romance of George Gibbs (Eric Gilde) and Emily Webb (Amelia McClain), as well as the lives of their friends and family members. On a stage stripped bare of theatrical artifice, Our Town remains one of America’s transcendent, timeless works.
