Having Our Say, playing now at the Grand Theatre, tells the story of the Delany sisters. They are both just over 100 years old and have come together to reminisce, focusing on their experiences overcoming prejudice and discrimination to become educated, professional, African-American women during the early 20th century. The play is based on real events by way of the memoir written by Sadie and Bessie Delany, with the help of Amy Hill Hearth.
The show is part of The Edward Lewis Black Theatre festival, a collaboration between The Grand Theatre, People Productions, Plan-B Theatre Company, Pygmalion Productions and Utah Contemporary Theatre to celebrate Black History Month. It also honors the co-founder of People Productions, who died in 2009. The festival offers a mix of full-scale theatre productions and staged readings about the black American experience.
