No doubt about it, Utahns love their temples. Today at 10 a.m., the Sri Ganesha Hindu Temple celebrates its Annual Day with a procession that involves pulling a colorful chariot, or Ratha, around the temple’s perimeter. The Ratha carries “Festive Deities,” which are taken out of the temple and along city streets to bless the neighborhood and the homes of the faithful.

Accompanying the deities are ornately costumed dancers and musicians; meanwhile, devotees vie for a chance to pull the Ratha around the temple.

The celebration kicks off with the breaking of a coconut (representing the ego) followed by the lighting of a lamp (of enlightenment). The temple, dedicated in 2003, provides a center for nearly 5,000 worshippers who claim ethnic ties to India. But it’s open to anyone interested in Hindu traditions and heritage, so today might be a good day to poke your nose in, you know … good karma.
