Summer is coming, and that means it’s a great time to adopt a furry hiking buddy or a lazy, sitting-on-the-porch feline at a special pet adoption event this weekend in Layton. Later, make sure you’re in on a University of Utah forum hosting the environmental advocates of Save Our Canyons. And you won’t want to miss the opportunity to volunteer for Salt Lake City’s Living Traditions Festival in May.

Cold Noses, Warm Hearts Pet Adoption Event
Saturday & Sunday, April 14-15

The defenders of abandoned dogs and cats, Best Friends Animal Society and No More Homeless Pets, are holding a pet-adoption event in Layton this weekend. Bring home a cold nose to warm your heart with a large selection of pets that are already spayed, neutered and vaccinated. PetSmart, 750 N. Main, Layton, 801-432-2124, April 14, 10 a.m.-7 p.m.; April 15, 10 a.m.- 4 p.m., UtahPets.org

Environmental Stewardship
Wednesday, April 18

Salt Lake County has canyons of awe-inspiring beauty to match any of Utah’s natural wonders. But the canyons in our backyard can often be neglected, and that’s why Carl Fisher, the director of local nonprofit Save Our Canyons, will be speaking at this forum hosted by the University of Utah’s Lowell Bennion Community Service Center in talking about being responsible stewards of our environment. The event is free and open to the public. Hinckley Caucus Room, Orson Spencer Hall, 260 S. Central Campus Drive, University of Utah, 801-581-8501, April 18, 12 p.m., BennionCenter.org

Living Traditions Festival Volunteers Needed
May 16-21

The Salt Lake City Arts Council is looking for more than a few good men and women to come out and support this vibrant celebration of the diverse arts and cultures of Utah’s ethnic communities. Volunteers are needed for brief commitments to help with everything from setting up and taking down the festival to manning beverage sales and the bocce-ball court. Volunteer opportunities run May 16-21; for more information contact Jeda Higgs of the Salt Lake City Arts Council at 801-596-5000 or jeda.higgs@SLCgov.com
