Activism Boot Camp

This weekend offers one hell of a conference on citizen activism—two days packed with more events than you can shake a Molotov cocktail at.

Strategy & Tactics for Movement Building and Progressive Social Change Friday & Saturday, Feb. 13-14

The winter conference—hosted by the U’s Campus Committee for Peace & Justice, the Healthy Planet Mobilization Committee, Utah Jobs With Justice and the Wasatch Coalition for Peace & Justice—has enough causes, speakers and information to help even the most cynical and apathetic citizen harness his or her inner Che and go forth to engage in some kick-ass revolutionary activism. The conference rolls out Friday night at 7 p.m. with a screening of the documentary Battle in Seattle, examining the famed 1998 World Trade Organization summit protests. The film concludes with a panel discussion with activists ranging from Utah Labor activist Terry Porter to resident monkeywrencher Tim DeChristopher.

Saturday kicks off at 10 a.m. with a session on war and terrorism by the Iraqi Veterans Against the War followed by an 11 a.m. session with former Salt Lake City Mayor Rocky Anderson and others who’ll address environmental crisis and movement building. Don’t forget at 3 p.m. to learn about Equality Utah’s Common Grounds Initiative and their uphill battle at the Legislature for basic legal protections for Utah’s LGBT community. And that’s seriously just a sampling of the workshops.

University of Utah, Orson Spencer Hall, 260 S. Central Campus Drive, Feb. 13, 7 p.m.; also Feb. 14, 10 a.m.-4 p.m., 801-606-2074, UtahJWJ.org

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Utah Bowling Tournament Saturday, Feb. 28

This one’s looking ahead a bit, but the Revolt is sounding the call now. Faced with being wiped out by upcoming budget cuts, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Utah is seeking volunteers to put together charity bowling teams to play in a tournament at the end of the month.

A four-person team pays only $100 to register for the tournament and it’s a fun way to help out more than 1,800 kids in need in Utah.
