Salt Lake City is getting closer to changing the way its citizens can initiate protections for historic districts. Among some of the proposed changes are new rules on who can initiate petitions for a historic district. The new process would, for example, allow the mayor, a majority of city council members or 40 percent of property owners in a district to start the petition process. The process would also change the requirements for designation—allowing the city council to approve a designation by a two-thirds majority vote even if more than half the property owners disagree with the decision. Come out and speak up so that you’re more than just a footnote in your city’s decision-making process.

Real Women Run

Let’s face it: Utah politics are in dire need of a woman’s touch—and, for that matter, perspective and voice. This free conference will help women learn the basics of getting politically involved. A keynote address by Katie Groke Ellis, Rocky Mountain regional director of the White House Project, will explore why women don’t run for office and how to get past that. Later, get inspired from a panel of local female politicos ranging from former Salt Lake City Mayor Deedee Corradini to Saratoga Springs Mayor Mia Love. Work sessions will cover subjects like running a campaign, raising funds and understanding Utah’s caucus and convention system. Register now to reserve a spot and receive a free lunch.
