I worked with the homeless population in SLC for over 6 years. Everyone knows that SLC doesnt have a homeless problem, they have a mental illness and drug abuse problem. Do I have all the answers?-nope. But I do know that giving free handouts doesnt help. There needs to be a program set up that requires people to work for their meals and roof. Yes, there is a LITTLE of this, but there needs to be about 99% more. Homeless should be managing gardens, cleaning the city, etc. And guess what, when you get caught with drugs inside or outside the shelter, there should be a mandatory sentencing to a 30 day detox. Yes the shelters help those people who are down on their luck, but its also a breeding ground for selling drugs and prostitution. There needs to be a balance between compassion and hard knocks. Lets get help for those who need it. Lets give the people who need a kick in the ass just that.
