As part of Westminster’s May Term class, Autism: Awareness or Epidemic?, students in the School of Education will host this family event that is open to the public. Students will provide more than 20 activity stations, including a sensory station, finger painting, bubbles, a bounce house and more.
More than 50 children and families and 20 Westminster students and faculty are registered to attend. Most of the families are from Salt Lake. Westminster students enrolled in the Autism class represent fields from neuroscience, nursing, education, psychology and public health.
“This is one of best ways to celebrate the end of the school year. My students get a wonderful opportunity to interact with children with autism and their families,” said Dr. Shamby Polychronis, Westminster associate professor in special education. “It is important for us to be able to have experiences that move beyond a book, and begin to change societal barriers.”
