Milton Glaser is among the country’s most celebrated graphic artists whose laurels include creating the “I Heart New York” campaign. Glaser will speak at the BYU Museum of Art at the Lied Gallery Sept. 28 at 7 p.m. about his current exhibition Just Enough Is More.

When did you decide to become an artist?
nWhen I was 5, my cousin came into the house and said he had a bird in a bag. I expected to find a bird, but instead only saw a pencil drawing of one. That’s when I realized creating art was what I wanted to do.

How did you come up with the “I Heart New York” icon?
nSince the work was commissioned by the city, I did not originate the phrase. My job was to find the visual equipment. I had already submitted another design that was accepted, but I was sitting in a taxi cab when the final idea came to me. Luckily, they accepted it.

What is your favorite T-shirt parody?
nI liked the one in an African dialect that says, “I Love Rhinoceroses.” I am astonished at why this silly doodle suddenly filled the available spaces in people’s mind.

“I Heart New York More Than Ever”'why the variation on the icon?
nIt occurred to me that “I Heart New York” wasn’t sufficient anymore after 9/11. After the logo said we’re the best, we were suddenly vulnerable'we realized we really did love the city.

An inscription on your office door in New York City reads, “Art Is Work.” What’s it mean?
nAs they say: there is no art, there are only artists. Art is a period and condition of the moment. It’s also subject to the belief system at the time. I think it is a profound statement.
