Political icon and independent candidate for president Ralph Nader is bringing his “People Fighting Back” campaign to town featuring his friend and former Salt Lake City Mayor Rocky Anderson on July 31 at 7:30 p.m. at Libby Gardner Hall, 1375 E. Presidents Circle, $10 (or $5 for students.)
Why are you making a stop in Utah?
My friend Rocky Anderson is going to be there and we have a lot to talk about. We want to provide a better brand of politics to prepare voters better than McCain and Obama and give voters more of a choice.
What is the “People Fighting Back” campaign?
It is people fighting against the duopoly of presidential debates. It is three-prong: resistance, challenge and enlightenment. That’s what a political campaign is about.
Why do you promote solar energy?
Nuclear energy has not solved the energy problem; it is national security sabotage. Financially, it is so risky and so costly and it’s far more expensive in terms of its energy output than retrofitting buildings. Solar energy is about more efficient home appliances, such as lighting, air conditioning. Solar energy is more environmentally benign. It doesn’t require tax breaks or loan guarantees.
Has the Internet helped you gain popularity?
The Internet is a great and inexpensive way to communicate. We are raising more money on the Internet than we are through the mail. Mail is becoming more and more expensive. The Internet allows for a lot of creativity. We even have an interview on the Website VoteNader.org with Rocky’s parrot; he has wisdom to impart.
What influence have you had on American politics?
I’ve been instrumental in important legislation. I’ve done great motor vehicle law, established a cooperative bank and on and on and on and on. I started over 150 cooperative groups.
