How does smoking the E-Cig compare to a regular ciggie?
nThose using traditional cigarettes will attest that part of the addiction includes the rituals associated with smoking, e.g., blowing smoke rings, hand-to-mouth actions, having a smoke after eating or with friends, etc. These new devices offer the smoker virtually the same experience without the dangers of tobacco, second-hand smoke or lingering odor.
Smoking in private clubs is out. Clean air is in. So what’s that coming out of your “smokeless” cigarette?
nThere is no ignition or combustion, i.e., nothing is “lit.” A microchip-controlled atomizer serves to vaporize a small amount of propylene glycol, nicotine and flavorings that produce water vapor.
If no tobacco is involved, and no actual smoke comes out, it should be legal to puff on one of these in public places, right?
nYes, these devices are outside of the purview of the Utah Indoor Clean Air Act. I have had a few individuals come up to us and say, “Don’t you know you can’t smoke here?” After a brief explanation, most people are OK with the device being used. In fact, most people are immediately intrigued. However, there are some establishments who maintain that these still look like smoking, and they do not want the appearance of smoking in their businesses. This is entirely up to each business owner.
How do you know it’s safe to inhale the vapor?
nI’ll bet it’s safer than a Utah inversion! But seriously, there are no known carcinogens in this product. And one can obtain zero-nicotine cartridges and bypass the highly addictive substance (nicotine) found in traditional cigarettes. Moreover, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has determined propylene glycol to be “generally recognized as safe” for use in food, cosmetics and medicines.
Aren’t you concerned the Utah Legislature will find out and move to tax and regulate nicotine consumption?
nWell, I guess we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it. I think most legislators will be very encouraged to learn that these products are a wonderful alternative to traditional cigarettes, and much friendlier to the environment. Think of it—no smelly cigarette butts on the sidewalk!
